Once upon a time there was a poor man living by the riverside. He didn’t have the money to feed his family. But every morning a good, rich man came to the house of the poor man with a fishing pole. And every morning the rich man would catch some fish and give it to the poor man, so that the poor man could eat and feed his family. Once the the rich man woke up being ill and he could not go to the river. While laying in his bed he thought of the poor man and his family that didn’t have any food to eat! The more he thought about the poor family, the more sad he became. And the grief kept him sick and made him even sicker. After one week without any food the rich man died in grief. And the poor man with his family died of starvation. The end. I know it’s a sad story. But it’s a very realistic story with an important lesson! Because if only the rich man would have taught the poor man how to catch fish, both man would still have been alive! Maybe the poor man would even have taught other poor friends how to catch fish! And they would have started a real business, selling their fish in the city to the rich people! And the poor and the rich would have gotten to know each other and new friendships developed and new fish business ideas came into existence and everything would just be very, very well! Only if the rich man taught the poor man to fish. So why did the rich man not teach the poor man how to do it? How to become self supportive? Maybe he just forgot. Maybe he thought the poor man was not smart enough to learn how to catch fish? Or maybe he thought that the poor man didn’t have time to catch enough fish for his family? Or…. Maybe he didn’t want to…. Maybe he was just addicted to the good feeling it gave him to go up to the river every morning with his fishing pole, his rich friends looking at him and praising him for his good behavior, and to see the smiling faces of the poor people when he gave him the fresh fish. Maybe he wanted to look very kind and compassionate but actually he was very, very selfish… We want to learn from this story and this lesson. Of coarse we love to directly help people. And of coarse everyone likes the smile on the face of a hungry African boy receiving a bole of rice. But we just believe that real help comes through helping the poor and needy to take care of themselves. This is what we strive for. And this is what we do at Nam Jai Coffee & Tea. We don’t want to give fish, we want to teach people how to fish. |
